¿Alemania? Me pregunté inmediatamente. Si no sé hablar alemán, ¿cómo voy a ir a Alemania?

English:

You could say that this madness began a little over a month ago, when excited and a little scared I took a flight to Germany telling goodbye to my country for a year. But this madness truly began much earlier, because all the preparation is also part of this great year.

It all started in mid-2018. It was the last year in the school that I went to almost all my life, full of changes and closures of stages. People started asking me the typical questions like “do you already know what you are going to study next year?” or “to what university are you going?” that they usually do. But since I still did not have answers to those questions, I thought about doing something different. I was not sure what, but I felt it was time to do something new. It was there when I was asked to volunteer in Germany. That option fitted well with the idea that I had to do something different, to leave the well-known comfort zone. But there was something that still did not fit. Germany? I asked immediately. If I do not know how to speak German, how am I going to go to Germany? A year away from my family and friends? It’s crazy, I thought. But the idea never went away from my head. Volunteering abroad after finishing school, getting to know new places and new people, experiencing social work for a whole year. Those were the things that motivated me the most and made me forget all the „negative“ things that could be part of the experience.

It was there when I decided to sign up for the volunteering and bet on what is different. That was the day that everything began. Postulating, coming through several interviews, many questions that already had answers but many others that still have not. The nerves and the anxiety to know if they chose me or not, the plan B in case they did not choose me. The great news, the happiness of saying yes, telling all my family and friends, their reactions. The preparations, the expectations. The days before, the farewells and the „up to one year!“. At the preparation seminar in Baradero Argentina I met all the other volunteers, they prepared us together, we were expectant and anxious. Imagining together how everything would be.

But the great and real madness began on February 18, when along with Mechi and Iara we took that plane to the unknown but as well to what we most wanted to know. We arrived and that same day we started with the seminar of introduction, already getting to know many new people the first day. I could write a whole blog about the seminar, because it was amazing. There were people from all over the world, each one representing their country in a unique and special way. Everyone’s motivation could be seen in each activity, in each game, in each song. There was a positive energy all the time, it was so contagious. Even the days were sunny, it was incredible! But after ten days of coexistence and learning we had to say goodbye and now, yes, go each one to our new home. It seemed like everything had already started, but the real beginning was there. At that moment reality began, the seminar was only a preparation for what was really coming.

Arriving at my new home was very nice, the family received me in a very friendly and welcoming way. They integrated me from the first moment and have always been very kind to me. I’m lucky that in my new home they speak in Spanish and English, so I have no problem communicating in here. But the world is outside the house, and maybe it can be difficult to communicate at the beginning. The first day in Kindergarten was a bit confusing. I noticed right away that the teaching method in Kindergartens here and in Uruguay is very different. At first it was a bit difficult because I did not know how to work. But like everything, it is a matter of observing, asking and adapting. It is a process that takes time, but you learn a lot. Today, after three weeks of work, I feel much more comfortable and the most important thing is that I can enjoy the work. It is nice to realize that without knowing the language very much, I can communicate very well with children through games, looks or laughter.

And what can I say about Germany? The streets of the city, the silence of the villages, the sound of the birds in the morning, the punctuality of the transport and the rain almost every day are things that will always amaze me. I’m aware that I still have a lot to learn but from what I have learned, I am already delighted. And now that spring has arrived and you can see the flowers on the street, every day will be even more beautiful!
